Lukla Flight Schedule Update

Due to increasing air traffic congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), all flights to Lukla now operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap during peak trekking seasons. This change ensures smoother operations and reduces the risk of delays or cancellations. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Seasonal Changes (Peak Trekking Periods)

During the busiest trekking seasons—April 1 to May 30 and October 1 to November 30—flights to and from Lukla will operate exclusively from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, not from Kathmandu. This adjustment helps manage the high volume of trekkers and reduces congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

2. Air Traffic Management

Even outside of peak trekking seasons, flights to Lukla may be rerouted to Manthali Airport due to heavy air traffic in Kathmandu. This ensures safer and more efficient flight operations.

3. Weather Considerations

Lukla’s location in the Himalayas makes its weather highly unpredictable, especially during the monsoon season (June–August). Fog, rain, and strong winds can frequently delay or cancel flights. Travelers are advised to stay flexible and plan for potential disruptions.

Travel Tips

  • Buffer Days: Always include an extra day in your itinerary for potential flight delays or changes.
  • Transportation: For flights departing from Manthali, a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu is required.
  • Stay Updated: Stay in close contact with your trekking operator for real-time updates on flight schedules and weather conditions.

Updates from Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN)

  • Flight Route: Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla will only operate during off-peak seasons: December–February and June–August. During peak seasons, all Lukla flights will operate via Manthali Airport, a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu.
  • Why the Change? The shift is to reduce air traffic congestion and ensure safer, more reliable flight operations.
